Facts About Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a chronic illness characterized by widespread body pain and tenderness. It can also cause fatigue, numbness, burning sensations in the hands and feet, headache, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, abnormal sensitivity to light touch-pressure feelings (paresthesia), or an extreme sense of “exertion” after minimal physical effort (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome).
The etiology of fibromyalgia isn’t fully understood but it may be caused by an imbalance in chemicals within the brain resulting from unhealthy neurochemical regulation. A person could have a genetic predisposition for this condition that coincides with environmental triggers such as trauma/stress or infection which would then throw off the body’s chemistry.
Fibromyalgia is a common but often misunderstood and misdiagnosed condition caused by the inflammation of the muscle fibers that cover the body’s nerves. The symptoms are pain, fatigue, headaches and difficulty concentrating.
The term “fibromyalgia” does not refer to any specific disease or disorder. It has come into general usage because its definition fits many rheumatic conditions involving tender points in muscles and other connective tissue around joints as well as widespread aches and pains throughout the body.
Depression is a clinical mood disorder characterized by low levels of concentration, loss of interest in things that were important to the person before, decreased energy level, and sleep changes. These are usually accompanied by subtle physical complaints such as headaches, stomach aches, body pain or tenderness which are not caused by anything else.
There may also be episodes where these symptoms come and go without any apparent reason. Depression usually lasts for weeks or months at a time and gradually moves on its own, so it can get worse if left untreated. The symptoms do vary across individuals depending on the severity of their depression, but it’s not uncommon for people with severe cases to exhibit some signs of co-morbidity due to the high prevalence of other diagnoses.
How Does Ketamine Help Fibromyalgia?
Ketamine has been shown to help fibromyalgia in a few different ways. First, it blocks the NMDA receptor which decreases their activity. Second, it activates alpha-2 adrenergic receptors that increase pain tolerance and also decreasing sensitivity to stimuli (pain). Lastly, ketamine acts as an allosteric modulator for glutamate receptors which may indirectly decrease hypersensitivity (pain) by reducing inflammatory conditions.
